Luther Still Unconcious: But Mother Confident of Recovery
ルーサー、依然　昏睡状態。母親は回復に自信 4月16日、ニューヨークの自宅で倒れたルーサー・ヴァンドロスは、その後も意識を回復せずに依然昏睡状態が続いている。いくつか外電が入っているので、まとめて紹介しよう。 ルーサー・ヴァンドロスの母親、メアリー・アイダ・ヴァンドロスが12日（月曜）にステートメントを発表した。「息子は必ず回復します。回復すべきなのです。彼は、私が持っている最後の宝物だから。彼は、唯一生き残っている子供なのです」 母は、2ー3日おきにルーサーを見舞い、手を握り、彼が好きなアレサ・フランクリンやディオンヌ・ワーウィック、彼自身のレコードをかけている、という。ルーサーが倒れた直後はかなり危険な状態が続いたが、以後は危険ながらも安定した状態になっている。現在は器官切開し人口呼吸器が呼吸を助けている。「息子がよくなるのは時間の問題だと思う。ただし、ゆっくりなペースですが」と母は言う。 ルーサーの新作アルバム 『ダンス・ウィズ・マイ・ファーザー』 は、全米で6月10日に発売が予定されているが、この曲は亡き父、メアリーの夫に捧げられたもので、母はこれを聞いて涙したという。母はルーサーの状態いかんにかかわらず発売を遅らせないで欲しいという。「きっと息子も、予定通りリリースされることを願っていると思う。彼自身、このアルバムを大変気に入っていましたから。カンバックした際には、奇跡の復活物語として語られてほしいわ」という。 一方、ルーサーが80年代に2枚のアルバムをプロデュースし、元々ルーサーのあこがれのシンガーのひとりであったアレサ・フランクリンは、地元デトロイトの教会で、徹夜の祈りを捧げる。ここには仲間でもあるフォー・トップス、アレサの息子たちエディー、キーカーフなども参加する予定。 +++++ Wake Up, Vandross 夢。 ルーサーは、1951年4月20日ニューヨークに4人兄弟の末っ子として生まれた。上に姉２人、兄がいた。母のコメントから、すでに3人の子供たちは他界していることになる。父親はルーサーが8歳の頃（1959年頃）死去。 13歳の時に、ブルックリン・フォックス・シアターでディオンヌ・ワーウィックのショウを見て感激し、シンガーになる決意をした。ルーサーは言う。「（ステージで）ディオンヌが赤いシフォンのドレスに身を包み、歩きながら『エニワン・フー・ハド・ア・ハート』を歌った。その時のことを今でも覚えている。彼女は僕の前を横切って歩いた。その瞬間僕は音楽で一生暮らしていきたいと思ったんだ」 彼は高校を卒業するとウエスタン・ミシガン大学に入学。しかし、大学生活は孤独で、退屈だった。友人もほとんどなく、ガールフレンドもなく、スポーツに熱中することもなく、彼の人生は音楽だけだった。ルーサーの人生はヘッドフォンの中にあった。ヘッドフォンから流れてくるアレサやディオンヌの歌声だけが彼の友人だった。 大学をドロップアウトするとき、彼は医学を志していたルームメートに告げた。ルームメートは「君が大学を逃げ出すなんて信じられないな」と言った。ルーサーは答えた。「なあ、君が医者になり、僕が病気になったら、僕は君のところにリムジンで乗りつけよう。僕は逃げだすんじゃない。僕は自分の夢を追いかけるんだ」 その後、彼はセッションシンガーとして人気となり、自身のグループのアルバムも発表、81年にソロ第1弾 『ネヴァー・トゥ・マッチ』 をだし、以後大ヒットを続出、80年代にもっとも人気のソウル、Ｒ＆Ｂシンガーとなった。そして、人気シンガー、プロデューサーともなったルーサーの元にあるシンガーのプロデュースの仕事の依頼がくる。誰あろう、彼の幼い頃からの大アイドル、アレサ・フランクリンだった。 ルーサーがそのときのことを興奮気味に話す。「僕が子供の頃、もしアレサがレストランで食事をしていたら、きっと頭に血が上って、彼女が食べてるスペアリブでもなんでもいいからサインしてくれ、って頼んだと思う。彼女をプロデュースしないかと頼まれたときのショックを想像してみてよ。81年のことだった。僕は覚えてる。椅子に座って彼女がドアから入って来るのを待っていたとき、僕の心臓は止まったよ。彼女は僕を見るなり、『ヴァンドロス』と言った。彼女はいつも僕を『ヴァンドロス』と呼ぶ。それ以外呼んだことがない。彼女は言った。『私は「ジャンプ・トゥ・イット」が気に入ったよ。やりたいようにやって、終わったら教えておくれ』」 このアルバムは、アレサにとっても久々の大ヒットとなる。そして、それから22年余。2003年5月19日、アレサ・フランクリンは、一月以上昏睡状態の親友ヴァンドロスのために、教会で祈りを捧げる。彼女は「アメージング・グレイス」を歌う。アレサは、ヘッドフォンの中に生きていた少年時代のルーサーに生きる喜びと意味を与えた。そして、今再び、彼に第二の命を授けようとしている。アレサのソウルは叫ぶだろう。「Wake Up, Vandross（ウェイク・アップ、ヴァンドロス＝起きろ、ヴァンドロス）」　届け、その叫びよ、ヴァンドロスへ。 （『ネヴァー・トゥ・マッチ』ライナーノーツ＝吉岡正晴・著より一部転載） +++++ Vandross' Mother Confident of Recovery Mon May 12,11:56 AM ET By NEKESA MUMBI MOODY, AP Music Writer NEW YORK - Luther Vandross (news)' mother says she believes her son will recover from a stroke that has left him unconscious and in critical condition for almost a month. "He has to recover, he's all I have left, he's my last surviving child," Mary Vandross said in a statement Monday. Vandross is still unconscious and remains in critical condition, his record label, J Records, said Monday. The 52-year-old singer suffered a stroke on April 16 at his Manhattan home and has since been hospitalized at Weill-Cornell Medical College. He had a tracheotomy to help him breathe. Mrs. Vandross said she visits her son every two or three days, holds his hand, prays for him and plays his favorite music. "We play all his favorites ? Aretha Franklin (news), Dionne Warwick (news), and we play his music, too," she said. "Right after the stroke, he was in grave danger; it was very touch and go," Mrs. Vandross said. "But I feel that it is just a matter of time before he improves and, to me, his appearance gets better daily. It's a very slow process. But I believe there is nothing too hard for God." Vandross' new album, "Dance With My Father," will be released on June 10. Mrs. Vandross said the title track, a tribute to her late husband, brought her to tears, and so she didn't want to delay its release. "Knowing how he loves this new album, I believe Luther would want it to come out now," she said. "He is going to recover and when he does, I want him to be greeted with a big success story." +++++ Aretha Franklin To Hold Public Vigil For Luther Vandross Mon May 12,11:00 AM ET LAUNCH Radio Networks Aretha Franklin is holding a public candlelight vigil and prayer service for her good friend and collaborator Luther Vandross on Monday (May 12) at Detroit's Little Rock Baptist Church. Franklin plans to join the church choir to perform songs from her gospel album, Amazing Grace. The Four Tops are also set to perform, along with Franklin's sons, Eddie and Kecalf, among others. Vandross has been in a coma at Weill-Cornell Medical College in New York City since suffering a stroke on April 16. Franklin is not asking for donations at Monday's vigil--she is performing simply to show her support for Vandross. Vandross produced two albums for Franklin, Jump To It in 1982 and Get It Right in 1983. He also handled some tracks on 1991's What You See Is What You Sweat. +++++ Friday, May 9, 2003 Prayer service Aretha Franklin holds vigil for friend By Detroit News staff and wire reports He designed some dresses for her forthcoming tour, and now Aretha Franklin has organized a candlelight vigil and prayer service for her friend, five-time Grammy Award-winning singer Luther Vandross, who suffered a stroke and remains hospitalized in New York. Franklin is inviting her fellow Detroiters to come pray for the stricken R&B singer from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. May 19 at the Little Rock Baptist Church, 9000 Woodward, and across the street at the Northern High School Pavilion, 9026 Woodward (off Clairmont) in Detroit. Franklin will sing songs from her album "Amazing Grace" along with the Ebenezer Mass Choir. Her sons Eddie and Kecalf will also perform. Other guests include the Four Tops, Ortheia Barnes, Ursula Walker and Buddy Budson, and the Rev. Edgar Vann, the Rev. Jim Holley, and the Rev. Michael Jemison. Vandross, 52, suffered the stroke on April 16. The vigil and prayer service follows two national days of prayer on April 23 and 30 led by Franklin and the Rev. Jesse Jackson. +++++
